Literacy in Action!
As part of our ongoing commitment to strengthening reading comprehension and foundational literacy skills, our school has implemented several coordinated actions that directly support student learning:
1. Partnership with One-to-One Reading Volunteers
We partnered with trained community reading volunteers from our Homma community through the One-to-One Reading Program. These volunteers provide individualized, evidence-based support that reinforces decoding, fluency, and comprehension strategies taught in the classroom. By offering targeted sessions for learners who require additional support, including English Language Learners, this initiative addresses gaps identified in our school-wide assessments. It also promotes equity and inclusion by ensuring all students have access to skilled literacy support. Through these partnerships, we aim to build student confidence, engagement, and a love of reading.
2. Successful Acquisition of Two Literacy Collaboration Grants
Our staff applied for and received two Literacy Collaboration Grants. This allowed educators in two grade groupings (primary and intermediate) to work collaboratively with our Teacher Librarian, Mme Veilleux, to launch the Writer’s Workshop in their classrooms. These collaborative sessions support professional growth, consistent instructional approaches, and deeper integration of writing and reading practices.
3. Data-Driven Literacy Planning and Resource Allocation
Our staff reviewed our Fall Reading Comprehension Results Data and partnered with grade-level colleagues to analyze trends and determine whether decoding, fluency, or comprehension should be the primary instructional focus for each classroom. Teachers identified the human and physical resources needed to support their targeted goals and shared this information with Admin. Using school and PAC funds, Admin purchased high‑quality literacy materials aligned with each class’s needs.
This action supports our School Story in the following ways:
a) It ensures instructional decisions are directly informed by current, school-wide student data.
b) It promotes collaboration among grade-level partners, strengthening coherence in literacy instruction.
c) It allows teachers to implement differentiated, research‑aligned strategies based on classroom needs.
d) It ensures students receive timely access to the resources required to enhance their decoding, fluency, and comprehension skills.
e) It demonstrates a coordinated, school‑wide commitment to improving literacy outcomes and supporting all learners.
Next Steps: Applying Learning Through Authentic Projects
As we continue building excitement around literacy, a natural next step is to give students real‑world opportunities to apply their writing skills. Our Writer’s Workshop learning will extend into projects such as Science Behind, Concours d’Art Oratoire, Comic Con, and the Heritage Fair. These meaningful, performance‑based tasks help students see themselves as authors, researchers, and storytellers - all while building confidence and joy in sharing their ideas. There is so much to look forward to in the coming months!
Next Steps: Building Our Literacy Maker Space
Another next step is the development of our Literacy Maker Space - an environment where writing becomes active, hands‑on, and personally meaningful. Instead of viewing writing as a task, students experience it as a creative process where ideas can be explored, built, tested, and shared. By providing open-ended materials and opportunities for storytelling, students will be able to build, draw, act out, and design their ideas before putting them into words. This approach supports diverse learners, sparks imagination, and helps students develop confidence as writers. The Literacy Maker Space will nurture a love of writing by transforming literacy into an engaging, playful, and purposeful experience where every student feels inspired to create.
